为了让小鼠长出前列腺肿瘤，必须把包含有前列腺特异基因启动子和SV40—T基因的杂合基因插入一个小鼠的受精卵。如果插入成功，就会得到一只转基因小鼠，这样，成长的小鼠就能在其前列腺中表达外来的基因了。可以预测，这些小鼠会继续长出多个前列腺肿瘤。人们培育了一些这种易患癌症的小鼠，该品系被称作“小鼠前列腺转基因腺癌”（TRAMP）模型。事实证明，这些小鼠有多种用途。首先，因为小鼠一定能长出肿瘤，它们可被用于检验诸如饮食干预等预防癌症的策略。其次，它们的肿瘤可以用于测试药物治疗的有效性。最后，来自TRAMP小鼠的肿瘤细胞已经在实验室成功地培养出来，这些细胞系可以供试验使用：既可单独使用，也可被重新移植进同一小鼠品系的成年动物体内——这比等待TRAMP小鼠本身长出肿瘤来要快得多，可复制性也更强。
