如果我们现在带着批判的眼光去看中学里负数的教法，常常可以发现一个错误，就是像老一代数学家如上指出的那样，努力去证明记号法则的逻辑必要性。他们从（a-b)(c-d)的公式导出（-b)(-d)=+bd，以为就得到了证明，完全忽略了这个公式之所以成立取决于不等式a>b,c>d。因此，证明是虚假的，本来可以根据心理学的考虑通过承袭性原则而得出法则，现在却让位于一种伪逻辑的考虑。学生第一次听到这样逻辑证明时，当然是听不懂的，而最终只好相信；如果在高年级再讲的时候，还不能使学生形成正确的概念，那么某些学生就会产生一种根深蒂固的观念，以为整个概念是神秘而不可理解的，但事情竟常常如此。

在字母记号运算的基础上导入负数，其中所涉及的最重要的心理活动，是人类本性的一般表现，因为人类不由自主地倾向于在更一般的情况下运用一些法则，而不顾这些法则只是在一些特例下导出并成立的。

我不必再把这些道理更详细地加以解释，因为在许多书里，特别是在威氏和伯氏的书里可以很容易地找到非常好读的论述。

数的教学目的也许可以归纳为：要使学生应用运算规则可靠无误，应以有关智力的平行发展为基础，而不必特别考虑逻辑关系。

数学从对应于人类正常思维水平的某一点开始发展，根据科学本身的要求及当时普遍的兴趣的要求，有时朝着新知识方向进展，有时又通过对基本原则的研究朝着另一方向进展。

对于数学中的基础研究来说，是不存在最终的终点的，也不存在最初的起点，来为数学教学提供绝对的基础。
